Alcohol can affect fertility in several ways, including:
Women
Alcohol can reduce fertility by changing estrogen levels, reducing ovarian reserve, and affecting ovulation. Women who drink at least four drinks per week have a 16% lower chance of a live birth compared to those who drink fewer.
Men
Heavy drinking can reduce testosterone production, libido, and sperm quality and count. A Danish study found that men who drank more than five units of alcohol per week had decreased sperm quality.
