Acupuncture uses very fine needles to stimulate points linked to meridians which are channels of energy that we all have in our bodies. Sometimes I will use electro acupuncture which is where a set of needles are linked to a small machine via electrodes. A small electric current is then passed through the needles to stimulate the points. It is a bit like a TENs machine but where the tens machine sticks pads to the skin the electrical pulses are transferred through the needles to go deeper into the muscles or skin. The current sends more stimulation through than the traditional ‘twiddling’ of a needle and supplies a constant stimulation for up to 30 minutes at a time.
Using acupuncture helps to encourage the flow of Qi (energy) around an area, at the same time it can relax muscles and encourage blood flow. In this case this means that your body will begin to heal itself following your treatment. The machine I use has different frequencies that treat different ailments. Once it is switched on I will usually give you control of the machine. You would be aiming for the experience to feel a little uncomfortable but definitely not painful at all.
You will find that you are able to turn the machine up several times during your session. This is because your brain will switch off from what the machine is doing and forget about it. By turning it up the brain is then drawn back to the area prompting it to pay attention to your issue and this begins the healing process.
The brain and your body is a wonderful thing. We are programmed to heal ourselves but with all of the other things going on in our lives the brain often forgets to do its healing job. Acupuncture is a way of switching the brains’ focus back to doing what it does best – Healing you!
I have found the use of electro acupuncture to be a game changer particularly with muscle issues and pain. I find that I can heal people in fewer sessions in these cases by using the electro machine. A winner for clients saving them money.
